Paper fashion in Betty

I've been a fan of the online magazine Betty for a while and adore their soft stylings and girly notions. The fashion is cute but what really caught my attention was the cut out paper fashion shoot in the most recent issue. It was created by a wonderful lady called Lou Taylor from Brighton, who I have had the pleasure of meeting previously. Betty is very good at reinventing fashion shoots in magazines and breaking the boundaries from just a photographic shoot. Lou Taylor has shown you can communicate a current fashion styling without a gangly model and the other shoots within Betty add on to what you normally see. Even if it is adding garden flowers to a whimsical image, its refreshing and just so darn cute!

Ben Long - The Great Travelling Art Exhibition

"Using his finger to scribe into the layer of dirt built-up from exhaust emissions, Long creates elaborate drawings on the rear shutters of white haulage trucks. In this on-going series, collectively entitled The Great Travelling Art Exhibition, he expands upon the daubing and crude slogans that commonly adorn commercial freight vehicles."

Tea in Brighton with a Paper Stylists.

A few weekends ago a friend and I travelled down to Brighton in search of a sunny seaside experience. Unfortunately it wasn't so sunny and more windy but the seaside experience won out, with traditional fish and chips and a stroll along the pier. We also had a lovely cup of tea in a cute cafe in 'the lanes' with a fantastic woman called Lou Taylor, who is a very talented paper stylist and illustrator. Maybe you haven't come across a paper stylist before seeing as the term is pretty new but no less important in the modern world of illustration. Rob Ryan is the most prolific pioneer of this talent, with his work showing at the 'pick me up' exhibition at Somerset House and also being used in fashion magazines like Elle.

Having interned with Rob Ryan, Lou Taylor’s work is just as delicate and intricately detailed with a kitsch feel. She has created some stunning alphabet eyelashes for twenty6 magazine which seem to flutter like butterfly’s. As well as making all paper sets which look good enough to eat! This kind of work is so intricate that you must have the patience of a saint to have to keep your hand so steady and move at such an even pace. I know I wouldn't be able to cope but for Lou its a labor of love, a job she enjoys doing and will continue to explore. There is talk of more fashion work and adding to her lovely archive which you can see on her website.

Kudzai Dyirakumunda – Graphic Designer/Illustrator

© Kudzai Dyirakumunda
Currently based in Bournemouth, Kudzai Dyirakumunda is an upcoming freelance graphic designer/illustrator. His clients have included Universal Republic designing promotional work for Enrique Iglesias, Jessie J, Jay Sean, Bobby Brackins, Kevin Rudolf, John Brown and Lil Jon. Kudzai has also designed an apparel series “Black Jack” featuring his illustrations.

I asked Kudzai about his inspirations and plans for the future:
Q:Who/what are your main inspirations?
KD: I take inspiration from everyday things whether its music or current world events As i see the more your are aware of your surroundings and what is going on you'll be able to make better informed decisions.

In terms of design one of my biggest inspirations has to be Shepard Fairey. His work is technically amazing and aesthetically unbelievable but what I take most from him was how he started with his Obey Giant sticker campaign. Reading his book "Supply and Demand" I found out that the whole idea was an experiment of Phenomenology which is described as " the process of letting things manifest themselves".

So when ever I have a idea i never have a real intention of where it will go I just create it and see what happens, looking at how people perceive and analyse it.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
KD: I aint one to make plan my life 10 years in advanced it might be cliché to say but I take everyday as it comes you never whats going to materialize. What ever i'll be doing it will be involved in the creative field and expressing myself.

Ryoji Ikeda - Wade Thompson Drill Hall - illustration

Following critically acclaimed installations by Ernesto Neto and Christian Boltanski, Ryoji Ikeda has been selected by the Armory for its third annual visual art commission in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall. Ikeda creates a visual and sonic environment where visitors are submerged in an extreme illustration of projected and synchronized data. His work uses scale, light, shade, volume, shadow, electronic sounds, and rhythm to flood the senses. In choreographing vast amounts of digital information, Ikeda conjures up a transformative environment in which visitors confront data on a scale that defies comprehension, experiencing the infinite.

Ryoji Ikeda
A Japanese sound and visual artist who lives and works in Paris, Ikeda has collaborated with such artists as choreographer William Forsythe, architect Toyo Ito, musician and visual artist Carsten Nicolai, and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. Shown widely in Europe and Japan, this is his first major installation in the United States.

Who's Jack Magazine

'Who's jack' is a great monthly online and print magazine which has great fashion shoots, amongst some well written articles and intriguing interviews with the newest talent. The 'Fu-gyptology' shoot in issue 45 immediately caught my attention with its dynamic styling and striking geo-metric illustrations. The styling is metallic and structured with some great outer-space design ingenuity, combined with Elliot Rooney's illustrations, it makes very good viewing. Here are a few of my favourite images but I seriously suggest having a look at the online magazine or if you see it out and about pick it up, as it's free. Which makes it even better!
