The Verge of Catastrophe: First Brooklyn Art Fair Debuts in Chaos
BROOKLYN— At the labyrinthine Armory Show mega-fair there is a popular nostalgic conversational topic bandied about from booth to booth, along the lines of: "Do you remember when New York art fairs were new and fresh and weird and someone was selling that up-and-coming blue-chip artist's works out of a briefcase in a hotel bathroom?" So when Verge announced that it was taking an edgy risk, branching beyond its traditional edition during Art Basel Miami Beach week to launch Brooklyn's first art fair, some idealists hoped that this market experiment in the land of food co-ops could revive some of that adventurous, questing spirit. Now that it has debuted, will we someday look back on the inaugural Verge Art Brooklyn as a cherished cultural moment? A proud Brooklynite myself, and a fan of such moments, I set off to investigate. - READ MORE - Emma Allen

“Building upon three years of vibrant and exciting programming at their former home, the Shunt Vaults, members of the Shunt collective invite artists to animate the ICA's ground floor with a fun fair of events, from tattoo parlours to pheasants, sewing machine races to passionate love bullets”.
They opened yesterday, and will be running till the 27th of February, for more info click here.

Alex Young & Scott Move are having a print sale!
Alex Young & Scott Move are having a print sale! Thursday, February 10 · 6:30pm - 11:00pm
We've made all our prints as cheap as we can so our fans, friends and families can all get a slice of the action. £10. Can't say fairer than that. This isn't a swanky gallery show with silly prices on paintings and pretentious strokey-chin meetings about the emperor's new clothes. It's a piss up and a way of bringing art events down off their high horse a bit whilst getting our artwork into the hands of people who really appreciate it. That's you, people.
In addition, we'll be doing a canvas each to be viewed as a diptych which we will be giving away, that's right, GIVING AWAY for free on the night. To be in with a chance all you have to do is buy a print and leave us with your email address. Winner!
Come and hang out, have a beer with us and bag yourself some quality artwork for next to nothing.
See you there.

Whitewash at MOCA: Jeffrey Deitch Censors Blu's Political Street Art Mural
LOS ANGELES— Is street art too hot for the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art? The genre is known for its feisty, topical energy — fire that Los Angeles MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch, a longtime street-art evangelist, hoped to tap into with its much-anticipated upcoming "Art in the Streets" survey of graffiti greats. Now that show is likely to be stalked by controversy after the institution ordered the whitewashing of a mural by the well-known street artist Blu on the outside wall of the Geffen Contemporary building. The work had been commissioned as part of the run-up to the show's April 17 opening. Apparently, the erasure was an effort to avoid a political uproar. Instead, it seems likely to ignite one.
For his work on the museum's exterior wall, Blu created a massive panorama of coffins draped in one dollar bills — a provocative image considering that the wall faces an L.A. Veterans' Affairs Hospital, as well as the so-called Go For Broke monument, which honors Japanese-American soldiers who fought in the Pacific during World War II. The mural was whitewashed on Thursday, mere hours after the mural went up on Wednesday night. According to a statement issued by MOCA, "The museum's director explained to Blu that in this context, where MOCA is a guest among this historic Japanese American community, the work was inappropriate."
It's not clear whether the museum knew of the design in advance, or whether it actually received any complaints before erasing it. Los Angeles Downtown News contacted the veterans affairs center management, who said that they had not complained, while reps from the National Go For Broke Education Center said that while some members found the mural to be in poor taste, the organization had not voiced any objections to the museum.
Footage of the erasure has quickly circulated on street art blogs and became a sensation. In L.A. MOCA's statement, the museum says it has "invited Blu to return to Los Angeles to paint another mural." The Bologna-based artist, known for giant cartoon images that often deal with violence, is often listed as one of the brightest lights of the worldwide graffiti art scene. He has painted murals for such prominent venues as the Tate Modern, where he was part of a high-profile 2008 show.
So, what does the artist think about all this? Apparently he was on the scene for the whitewashing. Street art advocate and curator Daniel Lahoda told Los Angeles Downtown News that the artist was unhappy with the development. Blu's personal blog, which features two posts dated the day after the take-down, strikes a comical, if cryptic, note. One post features a drawing of the museum as a giant coffee pot, with a punning line (in Italian) underneath: "Of course, the first time I heard 'MOCA' this is what I thought of." The second features a picture of the whitewashed Geffen Contemporary wall with a caption in English: "a really nice, big wall, in downtown L.A."
UPDATE: Blu has said he is not going to return to MOCA to make a second mural, and he has issued the following statement to Animal New York:
"sad story
but watching the reactions is much more
interesting than giving my personal opinion

ABSOLUTE FILTH - Paul ‘Moose’ Curtis & Marc Cameron
Magazines get a dirty facelift courtesy of a cutting-edge wet and wild art technique, as seen in Dazed & Confused magazine.
Taking grafitti art to an entirely new level, these two art pioneers are taking to the dirty streets of Shoreditch to ingrain the names of 10 of the most influential independent magazines into the pavements.
Pressure washing the well known logo’s into the filth is a quite ironic twist to the idea of graffiti, removing the dirt rather than adding to it, on par perhaps with the guerrilla gardeners of the world. It's the ingenuity and temporary nature of the Cleanart project that the Daydream team love. As Curtis says, “I think its more subversive than traditional graffiti, as you could do it in front of a policeman. If the authorities still take issue with it, they’re reacting illogically to a harmless temporary form of self-expression. That’s not okay, and that's the art for me.” A fresh bit of guerrilla art, and it won’t be around for long, so find it if you can.

Matt Eaton - Solo Exhibition Nov 6 - Dec 2
Matt Eatons mesmerizing, distressed and layered artworks come from his exploration of his surroundings, when moving around from city to city. While trying to find some familiarity and comfort in these new places, he became fascinated with local signage, lettering and advertising.
This quickly led to a deep admiration for graffiti and the layers of old ads plastered on walls of buildings and subway tunnels. The decay of once new and seemingly important information and how quickly it is forgotten and plastered over have become a major theme in his work. This imagery became a travelling companion of sorts, never having to be left behind and waiting to be enjoyed in every new place he found himself with bright friendly colours and interesting new themes.
