Discover key designs that have shaped the modern world and be inspired by this fascinating exhibition of memorable objects from the Design Museum Collection.
Six design stories offer a diverse look at design tracing the history and processes of contemporary design. The show includes furniture, product, fashion, transport and architecture alongside a selection of prototypes, models and specially commissioned films.
The exhibition will be on permanent display until 2015, with some elements being changed every year. Preview selected objects in the collection before the exhibition opens by downloading the Design Museum Collection App for iPad, free from iTunes.

Stussy Berlin Chapter “Tribe” Pop-Up Store

Civilist and Firmament have teamed up to put together this exciting venture within the wall of the Stussy Berlin Chapter. Located in the Mitte district in Berlin, the store will be open for the remainder of the year starting on July 4 and will feature a photo exhibition consisting of archival imagery from 1989-1991 of the Berlin Stussy Tribe.

fondation beyeler is the first swiss art institution to dedicate an exhibition to distinguished american artist jeff koons.
the retrospective focuses on three central collections - 'the new', 'banality' and 'celebration' - formed by koons over the course of his
artistic practice which began in the 1980s.

'the new' is koons' earliest body of work, composed of readymade-like cleaning appliances. 'celebration' is a series of
high-gloss steel sculptures and large-format paintings in which koons addresses childhood in a baroque way,
and which he has continued to develop extensively over the last 20 years.

the showcase is a culmination of the various themes in which koons' has worked with, offering a survey of the contrasting materials
and aesthetics he has utilized in his art, all of which create a sense of nostalgia, the mammoth-sized figures and forms,
making the viewer feel small in relation, much like a child in a fantastical world.

in 1988, koons created 'banality', his most groundbreaking collection of sculptures crafted in porcelain and wood
which have since become (post-)modern icons. the series' central theme is that of the association between human and animal
which characterizes many of the pieces which are based on concepts of innocence and guilt, expressed through aesthetic means
of the forgiveness of sins and the dissolution of the notion of guilt, whereby the frequent recourse to saints or individuals
associated with sacredness can be seen. the overall imagery represented through 'banality' is derived from renaissance and baroque art,
popular culture and the world of toys and postcards, transforming in scale, medium or material from sculpture to sculpture,
making his work accessible reflecting koons' ideal that art reconciles all oppositions in order to reach as large of an audience as possible.

“Daydreaming With…” Hong Kong Exhibition

The large scale exhibition known as “Daydreaming With…” that marries the visual, aural, and other senses, recently wrapped up its Hong Kong Exhibition, to great success. The huge event was held at the ARTISTREE center and featured over 30 artists most notably Futura, Sophie Muller, U.N.K.L.E, Simon Birch, Jonas Akerlund, and many others. The greatest thing about our culture is the creation, curation, and collaboration of different people, which ultimately leads to something that could’ve never been achieved before. The nominations for the Designs of the Year have now been announced, see the full list below. All the nominations will be on show at the Designs of the Year exhibtion at the Design Museum, opening to the public on 8 February 2012. Category winners and the overall winner will be announced at the Awards Night at the Design Museum on 24 April.

‘Forever Bicycles

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum plays host to Ai Weiwei’s latest solo exhibition “Ai Weiwei Absent”. Media were given a sneak peek yesterday revealing the artists installation ‘Forever Bicycles’. The installation ismade up of 1,200 made-in-Shanghai “Forever” bicycles, housed under a 10-meter ceiling, the piece purportedly symbolizes a society in flux. The exhibition contains 21 works from the iconic and influential artist as it runs from October 29, 2011 to January 29, 2012. THanx Slam

Imelda Marcos Puts Her Foot Down Over Controversial Dildo Jesus Art Show in the Philippines, Shuttering It

If there's one thing guaranteed to raise hackles, its the kind of work by Mideo Cruz featured in the exhibition "Kulo," which opened June 17 at Manila's Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP): The pieces in question feature images of Jesus with large dildos fixed to their collaged surfaces, extending visibly outwards. In one offending work, Jesus's face is covered with a wooden ashtray topped by a semi-erect penis encircled by a dangling cross bracelet. In another, a large cross sculpture is adorned with a bright red dildo.

Arts & Culture Reece Jones at Triumph Gallery

 

British artist Reece Jones creates ambitious, enigmatic drawings in charcoal. Repeatedly and painstakingly building up the surface of the image then (counter-intuitively) breaking it down using sand paper and erasers. The resulting works evolve through a series of transitory stages until an atmospheric and resonant image develops. 

For his exhibition at Triumph Gallery the artist has introduced the motif of a ‘blank’ rectilinear screen or white rectangle. This negative space inhabits a series of shifting hybridized landscapes. Appearing at times as a ‘constant’ or ‘control’ element, against which these ever-changing topographies are measured, the screens are also postmodern monuments, light sources and formal devices whose characteristics dictate the composition and resonance of the works. Exhibition by Andy Smith at Soma Gallery, Bristol

Hastings based illustrator Andy Smith studied at Brighton University and the Royal College of Art. When not busy working for clients such as Orange, Nike, McDonalds, The Guardian and Faber and Faber he can be found in his studio by the sea in Hastings printing books and posters which he has exhibited in the UK, France, USA and Australia. Specialising in silkscreen printing Andy’s work combines illustration and typography to create images with humour, energy and optimism, executed with a handmade tactile feel. Illustrating for 12 years, his work has won D&AD, Creative Circle and AOI awards and been featured in numerous books and publications.

His summer show at Soma Gallery in Bristol will include a set of 12 new large artworks, hand screenprinted by Andy and featuring his distinct hand lettering and visuals. They deal with bold statements, strange visitors, warnings from gurus, the thoughts of Captain Scott and other random themes. Accompanying these prints will be an eclectic collection of new 3D arrows and moose heads, totes, stickers and one sad lonely, goldfish.

We're really looking forward to this exhibition. It will be the first time a single artist has made up of the entire first floor gallery space in the new Soma! Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks.

London Miles - Literal-eyes

 

London Miles is proud to present an all-new group exhibition that takes a closer look at the content found inside the dusty book covers of iconic written works by great literary masters from across all generations. Literal-eyes concentrates specifically at the ways in which great writers have inspired this hand selected group of young and emerging European artists to be the painters they are today.

 Whether inspired by a novel, poem, or a poignant phrase from their chosen literary piece, 30 artists are recreating how they visually and literally interpret their all time favourite piece of narrative into a real life painting. Iconic writers whose narratives are being recreated include the all famous children's favourite and cartoonist Dr. Seuss to our very own national literary hero; William Shakespeare.  Artists have chosen their literary works from a broad range of authors, as well as foreign writers relevant to their home origin.
