American Gothic

Designer Rick Owens moved from California to Paris a decade ago, bringing his signature blend of glamour and grunge to the namesake fashion and furniture lines he launched there—and inspiring legions of fans and imitators. An exclusive look inside his Paris home. (Photography by François Halard)
Designer Rick Owens's home office in Paris—formerly the office of Francois Mitterrand when the building served as the headquarters for the Socialist Party in France—is furnished with a taxidermic monkey and Owens's Alchemist chairs.

John Galliano on Wednesday blamed work-related stress and multiple addictions

PARIS — John Galliano on Wednesday blamed work-related stress and multiple addictions for a series of public outbursts during which he is charged with uttering racist and anti-Semitic insults at a Paris cafe, but told a French court that he remembered nothing about the incidents. Summing up evidence from police depositions at the disgraced designer’s trial on charges of public insult, presiding judge Anne-Marie Sauteraud read out the alleged slurs in heavily accented English. They included “dirty Jewish face,” “f---ing Asian bastard” and “f---ing ugly Jewish b---ch,” among others.
Galliano, 50, said he was taking a “lethal” mix of alcohol and prescription drugs at the time of the events, which prompted his dismissal from Dior in March after 15 years as creative director and also caused him to lose control of his signature fashion house.

“After every creative high, I would crash and the drink would help me to escape,” he told a packed courtroom during the seven-hour hearing.  READ MORE

JR @ THE CENTRE GEORGE POMPIDOU, Paris

EXHIBITION at Pompidou Center from 23 May to 5 September
Here, JR has created an installation that combines all the tools from his new project, INSIDE OUT, and makes them available in this PHOTO BOOTH. The idea of printing a poster - the aesthetic and formal medium used by the artist - is erected as a monumental artwork. A bindi - a symbolic and spiritual Indian symbol - is integrated into the visitor's portrait.
INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images will be made into posters and sent back to the project’s co-creators for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or in a group; posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window to a wall of portraits on an abandoned building. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable virtually on www.insideoutproject.net.
INSIDE OUT is a collaboration between the artist JR, and you.
