Tim Marsella: The Ballroom
Cape Town's Young Dancers Waltz Through the Photographer's Vibrant New Short
The gliding figures and twirling colors at a junior ballroom dancing contest in the Cape Town suburb of Athlone are captured by photographer Tim Marsella in today’s film. While shooting a commercial in the South African city, Marsella heard a radio announcement about the competition and went to check it out as soon as there was a break on set. “The contest was taking place in a sports hall of the local Muslim community and the young dancers were all dressed up—it was gorgeous,” he explains. thanx nowness

'Dreams' by Koto Bolofo
After nearly three decades spent photographing fashion for the likes of Vogue, Louis Vuitton and Hermès, Koto Bolofo has now stepped out from behind his camera to launch his first apparel collection with US brand Anthropologie.
Bolofo’s intriguing career move was actually inspired by his
frustration with the decline in quality fabrics: ‘As a fashion
photographer for the past 27 years, I've noticed that the materials used
to make the garments have deteriorated through time,’ he says.
‘Nowadays a jumper or a shirt looks great off the peg, but you put it in
the wash and it bobbles up. It used to frustrate me during shoots
knowing that the fabrics weren't so texturised, and thus not as
photogenic.’ THANXS WALLPAPER

Life After
This series is an exploration into the tattoos, and lives, of members of South Africa’s ‘Numbers’ prison gangs (the 26s, 27s & 28s) after having been released back into society, normally after many years, if not decades, of imprisonment.
Tattooing has always been forbidden in the South African prison system, with severe penalties, but the drive to create these marks is so strong that tattooing equipment will be created somehow. Pigment will come from grinding up rubbish bins, industrial rubber washers, batteries, or bricks. This will then be mixed with saliva, and will be pushed under the skin with nails pulled out of furniture, or sewing needles. READ MORE

Sophie Bramly - Gallary 12 Mail - 1981 & +
It has not forgotten the rap, but it has perhaps forgotten, for the very young, that was the birth of the hip-hop movement, Afrika Bambaataa, Futura, Kurtis Blow. These funny cool guys, headed and tracksuit 3-band. Then, from the scratch, strong voices and especially the attitudes to the more unusual dances which clung to the asphalt…. Outside music and considerations of bands, youth has generated a strong in those years signage, in the dark recesses of the Bronx where to risk beyond the 125th street, needed be frankly brave. Jogging earned its stripes since, but also the Kangol hats and sunglasses to large branches of Cazals. This is a bit of this epic that tells Sophie Bramly, photographer at the time in New York and describe, in detail and to embrace the world of these bands emerging of a New York shared between Uptown still little cleaned, more living and a Bronx under high vigilance. His work is not social, but it is almost painterly, with a science to detail where the lace of a shoe, a thick shoelace tells as much as a portrait capturing this youth. Sophie Bramly exposes this work to the Gallery 12mail, the opportunity to find an Edition limited to 500 copies of these images… best.
